The Mullet - Business Opportunity?
Wednesday August 20, 2003
This is NOT one of the business opportunities I predicted in Top 10 Business Opportunities, but apparently there's a resurgence of interest in the Mullet - and some people are making money off it.
Remember the Mullet look? Hair that's short on the top and long in the back - a.k.a. business up front and party at the back. I'd love to show you a picture of a Mullet, but I haven't seen anyone sporting one of these haircuts in years. I guess the people around here are just light years behind and not aware that the Mullet has become not just a haircut, but a cultural phenomena with an incredible number of devotees. (Witness the thousands of web sites about Mullets if you don't believe me.)
I'm not saying that those of you looking for hot business opportunities should open your own salon or start selling Mullet wigs. But the Mullet proves that one person's trash is another person's opportunity and that riding the crest of a fad's wave can be lucrative. (If you're going to try this sort of thing, though, be warned; it's a lot like the stock market in that timing is everything.)
For those of you who just have to know more about mullets or want to see pictures, here are two Mullet sites that I got a kick out of. (Warning: almost all Mullet sites contain offensive language.)
More: MulletJunky.com - Follow the new to the site link to see a diagram of a Mullet and find out how the Mullet originated.
More: MulletJoe.com - Click on the "You Be The Judge" link to rate your Mullet spotting skills.
