Virus Warning: SoBig Flooding Inboxes
Thursday August 21, 2003
Just when we thought it was over, having successfully recovered from Blaster, now a new variant of the SoBig worm is flooding our inboxes. "Barely a day old, SoBig.F has already generated over a million worm emails - quite possibly a higher rate than any other virus in history," says Antivirus Guide Mary Landesman.
"SoBig.F is a mass-mailing email worm that arrives with subject lines such as 'Re: That movie', 'Re: Your application', 'Your details', 'Re: Wicked screensaver', 'Thank you!', 'Re: Thank you!', 'Re: Details', 'Re: Approved'."
"Like its predecessor, SoBig.E, SoBig.F sifts through files on infected users' drives to obtain email addresses which in turn are sent the worm. SoBig.F also has the same insidious twist found with SoBig.E. The worm sends itself as if "From" one of the addresses found on the infected users' system. This not only leaves an innocent party dealing with angry email accusing them of sending the worm, but they also must contend with "out of office" replies and undeliverable notifications for email they never sent."
In "Mass Attack of SoBig.F", Mary Landesman goes on to describe SoBig.F and gives instructions for removing it if you've been unlucky enough to be infected.
