Poll: What's the Worst Mistake a Person Starting a Small Business Can Make?

Thursday October 12, 2006
Cherilyn Lester's article Top 10 Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make When Starting a Business has raised some controversy about whether or not business cards and/or the yellow pages are a waste of time for start up businesses.

But most of the mistakes she discusses seem like obvious errors to avoid when you're reading through them. Hindsight is such a beautiful thing - and dim, too! Of course you wouldn't do that or didn't do that.

The truth is that everyone makes mistakes when starting a business. If we're lucky, we don't make too many, the ones we make are small, and we manage to correct and recover quickly. If we're not, we might make one of those critical mistakes that destroys our new venture.

Those kinds of mistakes are the subject of this week's poll. What do you think is the worst mistake a person starting a small business can make? Please take the time to vote in the poll in the right hand column of this blog. And if the worst mistake you can think of isn't listed in the poll, add yours in "comments" below.

You can also vote in previous polls if you like.

If you are starting a business yourself or thinking of starting your own business, these articles will help you avoid making any of these killing mistakes yourself:

I agree, Mary. That’s definitely another of the mistakes I made when I first started.
