Can I Get a Grant to Start My Small Business?

Tuesday June 24, 2008
"I'm a published author and experienced editor who's interested in starting my own magazine... As a Canadian woman, I'm wondering if there are any venture funds or grants I can access to help me get started? " - I. M. via email

I’m not aware of any venture funds or grants off hand but that doesn’t mean there might not be some out there.

You may have some success with grants because arts and culture has always been a popular grants subject. One place to start looking is this list of government programs.

You might also check the Canadian Heritage site, specifically their Guide to Canadian Heritage Financial Support Programs.

It’s always easier to get loans than it is grants and I don’t think you should overlook these sources, especially as you are looking for start up funds. First and foremost is the Canada Small Business Financing Program.

You should also have a look (if you haven’t) at my article on Small Business Loans for Women Only.

Good luck with your new venture!
