Election 2008: Which Party Is Best for Small Business?

Wednesday October 8, 2008
If we judge them by their election campaign promises, the Conservatives are way out in front. So far the Conservatives have promised:

  • to cut the excise tax on diesel fuel, from 4¢ a litre to 2¢, over a four-year period at a cost of $600-million;
  • further increase the amount of income eligible for the reduced federal small business tax rate to $500,000;
  • index the lifetime capital gains exemption;
  • work toward a 20% cut in the "paper burden" that small business deals with from the federal government;
  • abolish tariffs on a wide range of imported machinery and equipment to help manufacturers;
  • invest an additional $200 million over four years in the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative;
  • invest an additional $200 million over four years into the Automotive Innovation Fund;
  • provide maternity leave and parental benefits to the self-employed.
Compare these cornucopia of benefits to the paltry offerings of the other two major parties.

The Liberals promise to reduce the small business corporate tax rate by a full percentage point.

The NDP promises to set aside money raised through its cap-and-trade program for small businesses that are investing in energy efficiency and environmentally friendly technology.

That's it. One promise each so far.

So far, from a business point-of-view, the Conservatives get my vote. What about you?

I won’t vote for the stupid Conservatives, specially now that Harper has cut all that money for the Arts Funds to put it in Afganistan, open your eyes! It’s time for the Conservatives to jump in a lake!

So much for a non-partisan newsletter, huh? I’m appalled that you would send this out the day of an election. Take me off your list.

Oh dear! I was just trying to stir up some controversy and looking at the major parties by a purely business point of view. I appreciate your feelings, though, Mark. Send me your email address and I’ll take you off the mailing list.
