Each year Statistics Canada puts together an entertaining collection of Halloween statistics called Halloween by the Numbers.
Statisical tidbits revealed include how much squash and pumpkins Canada produced in 2008 (65,840 tonnes up from 65,000 tonnes in 2007), the value of the amount of candy, confectionery and snack foods sold at large retailers in October 2008 ($317 million up from $285 million in 2007) and the number of children in Canada of prime trick-or-treating age-- 5 to 14 years old-- 3,807,039 in 2008 down from 3,872,849 in 2007 - and the lowest turnout since 1990.
But that's not all. There are also statistics on movie attendance, apple consumption, zombies and the number of funeral directors and embalmers in Canada. Visit the page and read at your own risk. (Insert creepy laugh here.)
The most surprising statistic? To me the fact that 38,810 tonnes of pumpkin and squash were imported into Canada in 2008. Is this a potential business opportunity being overlooked?
What this collection of statistics doesn't say but that we all know is that Halloween is largely a commercial event, and a very profitable one. If you're thinking you'd like to steer some of these profits your way you'll want to read Halloween - A Really Sweet Business Opportunity.
