Being able to work from home has become a top priority for me over the years and I know I'm not alone. According to a Statistics Canada report, as many as 1.5 million Canadians work from home daily.
But working at home is not without its drawbacks. It can be isolating and frustrating. Marc Ruel, a Product Specialist at Brother Canada, offers these tips on making your work from home experience more productive.
1. Get equipped.
A home workplace is typically tight on space, and it is important to plan accordingly. Must-have technology includes a high-speed Internet connection, a computer, and basic word-processing and database software. However, those who need to be in touch with their company's computer network should also consider a VPN, which connects a remote user to a company's local area network. You should also opt for space-saving technology if your desk space is limited.2. Get Organized.
Get organized with convenient cabinets, desk caddies and appropriate shelving. Colour code and label all your documents properly, so everything is at hand when you need it and clearly identified.
3. Get your numbers in order.
Invest in accounting software to keep track of expenses. Review expenses regularly to identify buying patterns and look for opportunities to save and buy items in bulk.
4. Get motivated - and disciplined.
Treat your home office like a real office. When there's no supervisor looking over your shoulder, it's up to you to set your own schedule and stick to it. No excuses. Eliminate distractions - don't mix home and work responsibilities! Restrict visits with friends and household chores to after 5:00 p.m. or whenever your work day ends.
5. Be reasonable.
Know your limits and set your personal boundaries to define your work habits. Don't fall into the trap of working at 3:00 a.m. simply because you can. Again, by treating your home office like a real office, you will reap all of the benefits of life without a commute.
