"I am looking for clients to design websites for and was wondering where would be a good place to look?", asks Matthew in the Small Business Canada Forum.
Well as I say in my reply to Matthew, before any of us can give any advice about advertising methods, we have to know who the target market is.
It's a big marketing mistake to assume that everyone is interested in our products or services. As Marilyn Guille says in How to Find and Sell to Your Target Market,
"The most successful small businesses understand that only a limited number of people will buy their product or service. The task then becomes determining, as closely as possible, exactly who those people are, and 'targeting' the business's marketing efforts and dollars toward them."
So my first question to anyone asking about what marketing strategies or advertising techniques would work for their business is "What's your ideal client or customer like?" That person represents your target market.
Writing a Business Plan: The Market Analysis will guide you through the process of figuring out your target market.
Only after you've identified your target market can you Create an Effective Sales and Marketing Strategy and put together an effective Marketing Plan.
