The National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) provides financial support to qualified small and medium-sized enterprises in Canada to help them develop technologies for competitive advantage.

What's cooler than financial support? Not much. And this program may provide up to 100 per cent of salary costs associated with the project, or up to 75 per cent of contractor fees. Read the page linked above for eligibility requirements.

And don't think that you have to have a big company to participate in the Industrial Research Assistance Program. Patrick Ostiguy's company, Accedian, which developed a hardware device that troubleshoots Ethernet networks, started with just six employees. Funding from the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program was instrumental in developing the hardware and today Accedian is selling to 85 service providers with customers all over the world.
