Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) and the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) have announced the winners and finalists of the prestigious 2010 Regional Innovation Awards for new technology.
The 2010 Regional Award for New Technology recognizes small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for their innovative excellence in the development and application of innovative new technologies across Canada.
Winning this award is an incredible coup for the companies involved. While you can read the entire list of winners and finalists in each of the five geographic regions in this press release, I thought it would be most interesting to see what each of five winning companies actually did so I looked them up.
Here are the five regional winners of the 2010 Regional Innovation Awards for new technology and what each company does. (The descriptions are from each company's website.)
WINNER: SHIFT Energy Inc., Saint John, NB - "provides a cost-effective solution to unlock energy efficiency potential in commercial buildings through a proprietary combination of engineering tools, building control networks, and information technology systems and algorithms".
WINNER: Medicago, Québec City - "is developing highly effective and affordable vaccines based on two proprietary technologies: its plant-based Proficia™ manufacturing technology and its Virus-Like Particles (VLPs)."
WINNER: Cavet Technologies Inc., Toronto - "is a lighting solutions company that has developed the award winning LumiSmart ILC - intelligent lighting control solution... a proven patented technology that provides dramatic cost savings for all fluorescent lighting systems."
- Western Canada
WINNER: Boreal Laser Inc., Spruce Grove, AB - "Boreal Laser gas analyzers are typically used for critical hazardous gas or toxic gas detection applications. With little cost of ownership, Boreal Laser's gas detectors are self-calibrated, reliable solutions for your plant or refinery."
WINNER: Corvus Energy Ltd., Richmond - "Corvus Energy designs and manufactures high power lithium ion Energy Storage Module (Li-ion) energy storage battery solutions."
I'm definitely detecting a theme here, aren't you? As I said in Best Business Opportunities 2011, green technologies are where the government funding opportunities are, so it shouldn't be surprising that these are the technologies that people are working on developing.
Congratulations to all the winners!
