Because an advisory board provides a pool of knowledge and expertise, it can be a real help in steering your small business. Besides acting as a sounding board for your plans and setting objectives, an advisory board can also help you develop new strategies.

To make it easier to get your own advisory board up and running, I've put together these resources:

So choose the people you want to be on your advisory board and approach them. Remember, the worst they can do is say "No" - and you may be pleasantly surprised when they don't.

Been there, fell on my face because I didn’t do it properly.
Why do so many of us think we know it all?
Many reasons are given for small business failure rates, but in my opinion being stubborn is the # 1 reason.
There are lessons that can be learned by listening and more importantly realizing that no one can be an expert in all of the areas required to make a business successful. Marketing, operations, finance, product, legal… to name a few of the biggies.

There is nothing more valuable then a conversation with an experienced professional. Listen and learn…

I agree with you completely, David. It’s so much easier to learn things with your mouth shut.
And small businesses in particular can benefit from calling in experts to help with areas that their individual owners aren’t experts in. I wonder then why there seems to be such a reluctance to do so. Or am I just imagining this?

Paul, the key isn’t what you know, but what you don’t know.
Many entrepreneurs start a business based upon their talent, a talent to build, design, etc… but the place that we all fail is understanding how to build a business around our talent.
Talk to a few people who have done it… so many times they will vent their way into giving you all of the pitfalls and the good ones will give you guidance on making choices early on to build a business that fits your professional and personal goals.

Remember that owning a business becomes part of who you are, not just what you do… and that means major sacrifices…

Best of luck!
