Definition:
The non-profit corporation that is responsible for
IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions. One
of ICANN's goals is to give individual Internet users worldwide a voice in determining Internet
policy; by being a member of ICANN's At Large Community, individuals can be a
part of the policymaking structure for the Internet's domain name and numbering systems.
You can think of ICANN as the global CIRA. Both are concerned with managing
domain names, but CIRA deals only with Canadian level domains, and adheres to
the policies and rules that ICANN sets out.
