"As a young business we are not in a position to advertise in every venue available. Where do other small businesses find is the best place to spend their advertising money? "

The biggest challenge facing Monica's business today is keeping as up to date as possible with new developments. "The Internet is a constantly growing, changing, and expanding place. I'd need several hundred hours in each day to keep up with it all so I am challenged to pick and choose what to learn next," Monica says.

"In order to offer clients the best possible solutions to their needs, I have made contact with a great number of extremely good Web designers who are willing to share information, tips, and techniques with me. Many of these designers have special expertise and are willing to subcontract to me when special technical skills are needed."

This is in line with Monica's goal of better managing her time. She needs, she says, to figure out how to better separate the time she actually spends working for clients and the time she spends learning new things.

During the past year, Monica has been hired to do more and more graphics work for a variety of purposes, for print as well as for Web work. She's been concentrating on learning more about the differing needs of the print world. There are also several software programs that she's been wanting to learn but has been too busy working to find the time.

The business achievement Monica is most proud of to date is managing the day to day running of the business, "making the simple decisions that impact the way the business will grow and develop", and "watching the ebb and flow of MonicaWorks and determining what to accentuate and what to leave behind."

When she thinks about how her company has evolved, a conversation she had with a friend while walking in downtown Vancouver 20 years ago comes to mind. Her friend described reinventing yourself as "throwing all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle into the air and watching how when they land, they create a new picture."

"It's become clear to me that this is what I'm meant to do. Sometimes in life, things fall neatly into place, and that is certainly the way it happened with MonicaWorks."
