Welcome to the Canadian Small Business of the Month feature!

This month's interview is with Karen Fegarty of MailWorkZ. MailWorkZ is a technology based company that provides leading edge email applications and expertise, focused on the growing e-commerce marketing segment. The company's product is software called Broadc@st, which allows you to quickly create, manage, and send your own personalized email marketing campaigns. Located in Bedford, Nova Scotia, MailWorkZ currently has seven employees and two offices.

Customer service is critical to a business' success, no matter what business you're in. Karen Fegarty's success in "taking a business that was essentially dead" and turning it into a profitable, thriving business from her first month of operation proves that the quality of customer service you deliver can make or break your business.

Karen says the biggest challenge she faced in making MailWorkZ the successful company it is today was overcoming the association of the Broadc@st product with the previous owners. Broadc@st was originally developed and sold by a company that went into receivership, and after acquiring the original company's assets and rewriting a large portion of the code, MailWorkZ marketed the new product under the same name. Unfortunately, the original company's customer service had a poor track record. Previous customers had complained about the lack of customer support, for instance. Revamping the product wasn't enough; MailWorkZ had to win back old customers as well as woo new ones.

To do this, they have focused on providing exceptional customer service. MailWorkZ's slogan is "We will provide the best email marketing tools while providing ultimate customer care".  

Being an e-commerce business with products that are only available through digital means makes providing exceptional customer care especially challenging, but Karen and the MailWorkZ team have met and exceeded this challenge. Examining how MailWorkZ has done this provides valuable lessons for all e-commerce merchants.
