Welcome to the Canadian Small Business of the Month feature.

This month's interview is with Ian Scott. His experience starting and building PairoWoodies Publishing into a successful business shows us how important it is to be able to create and recognize opportunities... and that a weird business name can be beneficial!

"Do what you can, with what you have, right where you are."

Ian Scott took these words of Theodore Roosevelt to heart and decided to start his fourth business, PairoWoodies Publishing, which began as a Web site design business, and has evolved into a full-service provider of Internet solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses and organizations.

It was definitely not the best of times for Ian to be starting a Web-based business. When the idea for PairoWoodies came to him, he had almost no computer skills and was deeply in debt due to the recent breakdown of his marriage.

So why would Ian decide to start an Internet-related business?

Ian was already an experienced entrepreneur. He had started his first business while he was in college, although he says that at that time "running a business was all a mystery to me." However, he persevered, and eventually started a part-time fishing tackle business. What Ian really wanted to do was build custom fishing rods and sell them, and selling tackle and saving the profits let him raise enough funds to make an initial wholesale order of custom fishing rod components.

It was while operating Wishbone Custom Rods that Ian first become involved with the Internet. He hired Steve Henry to create a Web site for his business, and was impressed by the new business and inquiries the site generated. "I quickly learned how to use newsgroups to market Wishbone, and began to learn more about the whole Internet 'thing' ".

When Ian's marriage ended, and his house had to be sold, he no longer had the space to build custom rods. He shut down Wishbone and started surfing the Internet, looking for business ideas.
