Welcome to the Canadian Small Business of the Month feature.
This month's featured business is Pet Lovers Newsmagazine, Winnipeg's only
local publication dedicated to pets and their families.
Owned and operated by sisters Jo Hooper and Jan Vermette, Pet Lovers is a
free bimonthly newsmagazine filled with information on everything from nutrition
and health to city bylaws.
Pet Lovers Newsmagazine is about to celebrate their one year anniversary,
which is quite an accomplishment when the lifetime of so many magazine start ups
is measured in months. Jo attributes the success of the magazine to dedication.
"We are both committed to this project; we are very determined to make this
a profitable business for everyone."
Like other successful partnerships, Jan and Jo have complementary skills. Jan
takes care of the bookkeeping and office, while Jo does most of the design work
and making new contacts. Both of them share in the overall final design for each
page and make sure the layout of the magazine is attractive and easy to read.
Currently, Jan and Jo work on the magazine in their home offices in their
spare time (week nights and weekends), but eventually they plan to move into a
commercial building with their own offices, which Jo envisions as a fun-filled
atmosphere where people and their pets can come and visit (and read the
magazine, of course)!
Their primary goal is to have every Manitoban who loves pets receive a copy
of Pet Lovers Newsmagazine. To achieve this goal, Jo and Jan have identified the
main challenges to increasing their circulation and decided on specific
marketing strategies to
overcome them.
