Small Business Week is here! Gift yourself this week by getting away from that desk or counter, even if only for a few hours, and getting involved in at least one of the activities happening everywhere across Canada. Take in a presentation, go to an exhibition, attend a breakfast or brunch – the opportunities for networking and learning about new practices to give your business a boost are endless!

Organized by the BDC (Business Development Bank of Canada), in cooperation with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the theme of this year’s Small Business Week is CyberBiz, Innovations on the Leading Edge.

The week kicks off with the announcement of the Young Entrepreneur Awards Program award winners in Ottawa (October 17th). These awards recognize the best and brightest young businesspeople across Canada. Thanks to the BDC, winners are matched with prominent business leaders who act as mentors for one year, sharing their knowledge, experience and insight. (If you are or know of a deserving young entrepreneur, this is something to bear in mind for next year; nominations will open again in May, 2001).

On the BDC Web site, the ‘Special Events’ menu on the left side has a 'Local Activities' pulldown menu you can use to go to a listing of events in your province or territory. For instance, setting the pulldown menu to AB for Alberta brings up a list of events ranging from an Opening Kick-Off Dinner and Forum in Calgary on the 23rd, to a Women in Business Luncheon in Grande Prairie on the 27th .

And if you’re absolutely tied to your office and can’t get away, you can still get a flavour of what this Small Business Week is all about by reading some of the twelve articles on CyberBiz themes. The ‘Supplement Kit 2000’ link on the left menu of the BDC Web site takes you to a collection of materials intended for use by print media for special supplements or for feature articles. You can download these in MS Word 6.0 DOC format, if you wish. Topics include “B2C and B2B: The ABC’s of Increasing Productivity”, “E-Commerce Branding”, and “Helping Small Business Click Into the E-Commerce Race”.

But the best way to celebrate Small Business Week is to get out into your community and be a part of it. On the next page, you'll find a sampling of the Small Business Week events going on across Canada, (from East to West), with links for further information.

And just in time for Small Business Week, the Small Business: Canada Forum is now live! Now you can network, ask questions, and make comments about starting and growing your business online right here at the Small Business: Canada site! Just go to the Forum to log in and join the discussions.

See you there!
