Why would I want to register for the GST if I don't have to?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Why would I want to register for the GST if I don't have to?
Answer:

You will be paying GST on your business purchases and expenses. If you don’t register for, collect and remit the GST HST, you won’t be able to recover any of the GST you pay out in the course of your commercial activities.

If, on the other hand, you register for the GST HST, you will be able to claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) on your GST return for the GST HST you’ve paid or owe on taxable and zero-rated goods and services consumed in the course of doing business.

(Note that you will still not be able to claim ITCs to recover GST HST on goods and services you bought for personal use.)
