What's the difference between a business name and a Business Number?

By Susan Ward, About.com

Question: What's the difference between a business name and a Business Number?
Answer:

A business name is basically what a business’s owner or owners have decided to call their company to identify it to the public. Usually a business owner tries to select a business name that expresses what the company does and sounds good, to make the name as attractive as possible to potential customers and/or clients. If you are in the process of naming your new business, these two articles will help you create the best possible business name:

A business number, on the other hand, is a number the Canada Revenue Agency assigns your business as a tax ID when you register for the GST/HST, payroll deductions, import/export and/or corporate income tax. (If you need a business number and have not yet registered, here's how to register for a business number.)

So it's possible that a business may not need a business number if the business is not engaged in any of these activities. However, all businesses will need a business name.
