Social Media Marketing Needs a Strategy

Reader Stories: How I Use Social Media Marketing

From Sandra M.,

Tell us a little bit about your small business (+URL).

I'm an internet marketer.

How have you used social media to market your business?

I use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. I have my website's RRS feed set to automatically port my blog posts to Twitter and Facebook and blog every day.

I also Tweet and link what I think is worthwhile content for my target audience, usually every few days or so.

Describe your experience using social media marketing.

Twitter works especially well for me for making connections, I think because it's immediate.

I don't know if anything is a waste of time yet. I don't know if any of the things I've been doing have resulted in any sales but I do feel more visible and I've found a lot of interesting stuff to read on Twitter.

Lessons Learned

  • Don't just do it; come up with a plan first and set some goals, benchmarks, etc.
  • Commit to doing whatever you're doing regularly. Twitter & Facebook don't work well if you're just dropping in now and then.
  • Be careful you don't spend too much time playing around with social media rather than social media marketing. Marketing = executing a strategy, playing around = reading whatever, tweeting, constantly checking for updates etc.
