Canada's Do Not Call List: What To Do When You Can't Call

Wednesday October 1, 2008
It's official; Canadians can now cut down on the number of unwanted phone calls they receive by placing their phone numbers on the National Do Not Call List.

As a consumer, I'm giddy with glee, dreaming about all the uninterrupted dinners I'm going to have. (Well maybe - there are so many exceptions to the Do Not Call rules that Michael Geist calls it Canada's Do-Not-Hesitate-To-Call List.)

But from the business point of view, if telemarketing has been a sales generator for me, I have to be down in the dumps because of it. Now what am I going to do to keep those sales numbers up?

Turn to other types of marketing of course. Direct mail is an obvious replacement. Pitney Bowes, for instance, has just released DMWorks.ca, a do-it-yourself direct marketing tool, which they say allows anyone to create and send direct mail right from their own desktop. You'll also want to check out Canada Post's direct mail products and services.

According to The Direct Marketing Association (DMA), every $1 spent on direct mail advertising brings in $11 in sales - more than twice the return generated with any other medium.

But direct mail is not the only alternative. Email marketing, television ads - there are many other ways that you can reach your potential customers. If telemarketing has played a big role in your marketing, now's the time to sit down with your marketing plan and make some changes.

Telemarketers should welcome the do not call list since the folks who sign up are the folks that are VERY unlikely to buy anything from a telemarketer, so why waste your time on them. Your success rate on the folks not on the list should be much higher, so everybody wins

Please a copy of “Canada’s Do Not Call List…’ to my Brother John – hanako@cogeco.ca – with my compliments.

Why do have a New York Address???

Why do you not have a “Send to a Friend” facility?

I agree, Dave. The list could actually make telemarketing quite a bit more successful. And it should definitely make working as a telemarketer a lot more pleasant!

Hello Ray,

Sorry, but I have no access to the List and can’t send it anywhere.

There is a “Send to a Friend” facility on the page but it’s really hard to see in my opinion – it’s the little Email link at the top right.

As for the address…??? About has a New York address. Is that what you’re referring to? I live in Canada though.

I have my doubts about the do not call list. Since I signed up, my telemarketing calls have not been reduced. (I am past the wait time.) The most common, starting with a sound effect ship’s whistle and “This is your captain calling” comes in at least once every other week on every number I have… and always cuts off without giving me the info I need to lodge a complaint. I believe the national do not call list is just a farce to keep the Canadian people quiet for a while.
