There's no doubt about it; if you qualify, the federal government's Self-Employment Program is the best way to start a small business. The Self-Employment Program gives you three big advantages that most people starting small businesses don't have:
  • help writing your business plan;
  • expert advice and training while you're planning and starting your new business;
  • financial assistance to help with your personal living expenses while you're working on starting your small business.
Read about the Self-Employment Program and see if you qualify.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, a national charity which provides start-up and expansion funding for entrepreneurs 18 to 34 years old.

This is a great blog. It is empowering for Canadian small business owners to understand the financing options that are available to them.

I recently interviewed a Manager of Business Banking at TD to learn how much tougher it is to get credit during this recession and whether or not the rules have changed, specifically in regards to Canadian small business loans. Thanks for the compliment, Sandra! I found your Q&A with Melanie Porter of TD Canada Trust excellent, too; it really lays out what a small business owner can expect when applying for a loan through the Canada Small Business Financing Program.
I had to change your URL in your post though because I can’t get the one you gave to work; it keeps coming up with a blogger page that says the page does not exist – even though I know it does!

I’m glad that the interview was of value and thank you for your comments Susan.

Thank you very much for your creative solution to the broken link. I think the period at the end of the sentence read as part of the url.
