Small Business Week was originally created to honor Canadian small businesses and their contributions to our economy - and those contributions are well worth celebrating.

Here are some Canadian small business statistics from a recent study called Canada's Small Business Juggernaut, by BMO Financial Group's Chief Economist Dr. Sherry Cooper.

  • Small businesses employed roughly five million people in 2008, comprising nearly half of the private-sector labour force.
  • Between 1998 and 2008, small businesses created more than one-third of all new private sector jobs. In 2008, they created roughly 70,000 jobs, almost 70% of the Canadian total.
  • About 25% of small businesses operate in the goods-producing sector and the remaining 75% are in service industries.
  • It is estimated that 46% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have some degree of female ownership.

What Industries Have the Most Small Businesses?

  • Construction
  • Non-institutional health care
  • Professional services
  • Retail
  • Accommodation & food services
  • Truck transportation
  • Forestry

Some talking points for your next networking or social event - the main one being that Canadian small businesses are not just surviving; they're thriving!
