The best way to celebrate Small Business Week is to get out into your community and be a part of it. Participate in a luncheon, take in a workshop, network at a trade show; opportunities abound! Here’s a sampling of the events going on across Canada, (from East to West), with links for further information:

St. John’s Board of Trade is hosting a Small Business Week Luncheon October 25th in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Information on the Halifax Chamber of Commerce’s Business to Business Expo (October 25th, Halifax Metro Centre) includes a description of the free workshops offered, and highlights of the day’s events.

The Baddeck International New Media Festival October 19th – 21st, in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, focuses on content and creativity in new media, such as the Web, CD/DVD and digital animation.

Find out how your business can become an e-business at the ebiz-TExpo 2000 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, October 28th – 31st. This conference focuses on giving you the strategies and practices you need to get started.

The Metropolitan Montreal Board of Trade is offering several workshops over the course of Small Business Week; visit their Activities Calendar to get started.

The Mondial World Congress on Entrepreneurship runs October 19th – 22nd in Ottawa, Ontario. You can meet and mingle with hundreds of entrepreneurs interested in importing and exporting, and delve into a wide range of resources to help you achieve your business objectives.

Meanwhile, the Women in Trade E-vent is October 19th in Windsor, Ontario. Described as a business-to-business partnering forum that will bring over 200 women executives from Canada and the US together, this sounds like a networking opportunity not to be missed. Business growth through e-commerce strategies is the focus of the E-vent.

The Manitoba Small Business Centre is so excited about Small Business Week, they’ve declared October Small Business Month! A whole battery of Small Business Month Events are listed on this page, ranging from a workshop on ‘Exporting to the USA’ (October 25th, in Winnipeg),  through a conference for Canadian Entrepreneurs with Disabilities, called ‘Finding Solutions 2000’ (October 26th-28th, also in Winnipeg).

You can also find events in Manitoba through the MSBC’s Manitoba Business Calendar, which allows you to click on a day of the month and view the events, such as trade shows, conferences, and seminars, that are taking place that day.

The Canada Saskatchewan Business Service Centre is no slouch either when it comes to offering and promoting a full slate of workshops and events during Small Business Week. Their th in Regina, and the ‘World Markets Conference X’ in Saskatoon, October 26th and 27th. This conference promises the chance to develop new trade networks, by increasing your odds of meeting the right trading partner, client, distributor, or supplier. Presentation topics include E-commerce, Trading Houses, and International Contracts.

The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce wins my Best of the Net award for their online presentation Edmonton Small Business Week 2000. Click on ‘Events’ to see a complete listing of offerings, including the Breakfast for Success series, the Innovative Seminar Series, and workshops on just about every aspect of starting and running your business.

In Calgary, the place to be is the Smart 2000 Conference and Exhibition (October 23rd - 26th, at the Telus Convention Centre). Over one hundred workshops will be offered, as well as keynote speakers, panel discussions, and post-conference materials, all focusing on "the new challenges and opportunities of the 'e-world'".

The BC Interior SOHO Conference takes place October 20th and 21st in Kamloops, BC, with plenty of presentations, exhibits, and networking opportunities for Small-Office-Home-Office operators.

While the Fourth Annual SOHO Small Business Conference follows, on October 24th in Vancouver, BC. This year, the SOHO Conference is being held in conjunction with the eWorld Exhibition and Conference, which runs from October 24th - 26th, (also in Vancouver). The Western Regional Event for the Canadian E-Business Opportunities Roundtable, eWorld will include a keynote address by John Wetmore, President and CEO of IBM Canada Ltd., and over 70 seminars and 100 exhibitors.

If your home town isn’t listed here, don’t despair. That doesn’t mean nothing is going on there; it just means I didn’t have space to list the events in your area.

If you don’t see anything advertised in your local newspaper, give your local Chamber of Commerce a call; you don’t want to miss out on your chance to network and find that new idea that’s going to get your business growing!
