Best Business Opportunities 2006
Part 2: More of The Best Business Opportunities

By Susan Ward, About.com

Here are more of what I think will be the best business opportunities of 2006, for those looking to start or invest in a business.

6) Financial Advisors/Retirement Planners

The baby boomers are getting older and many of them are on the cusp of retirement. A study commissioned by TD Waterhouse found that two-thirds of people polled who have not retired are stressed-out about retirement investing – mainly because of uncertainty or a lack or money (CBC News). All that stress translates into a great business opportunity for financial advisors and retirement planners.

7) Organic Food

Organic food has long been touted as a great business opportunity but this is the year that it will really take off as increasing numbers of consumers worry about what they’re putting into their mouths and insist on having more organic alternatives. In Canada, organic agriculture has had 20 percent annual growth in retail sales over the past ten years; organic grain production is the fastest growing sector.

8) Recycling for Businesses

Paper, food, cardboard, ink cartridges – all that waste means a golden business opportunity. Many businesses would like to recycle, but don’t have the time or desire to organize it themselves. You need to do two things to make this a viable business opportunity; provide businesses with the containers and pickup services to make it easy for them and convince them that waste management is good for their bottom line.

9) Water Products

Remember the old days when people would fill a glass of water from the tap and drink it? Now you’re more likely to see a whole shelf of the fridge reserved for bottled water and it’s fashionable to have a water cooler standing in your kitchen. Cash in on this best business opportunity by becoming a distributor of water or products such as water coolers or water filtration systems – or go all the way and start your own bottling plant.

10) Construction Trades

The building and renovation boom will continue throughout 2006. If you are in a construction or renovation-related trade, your biggest problem will be trying to fit in all those jobs – and of course, as tradespeople will be in such demand, it will be a banner year for making money.
