Best Digital Recorders Under 100 Dollars

Digital Recorders That Record & Upload

By

Digital recorders had to meet two requirements to be considered for this list; they had to have a list price of less than $100 USD and still have the ability to upload files to a computer via a USB connection. Of course, they also still had to have the features and quality to make them useful to business people and professionals needing to record their ideas, meetings or case notes. Here are my choices for the best digital recorders under $100.

1. Sony ICD-UX512RED

PriceGrabber.com
A top choice in the under-$100 class, the Sony ICD-UX512RED comes packed with features including the ability to record/playback in stereo using the included external microphone and headset. The adjustable microphone sensitivity and intelligent Noise Cut feature maximize recording quality. USB connectivity is provided via with the included cable or the unit can be plugged directly into a USB port using the fold-out connector. 2GB storage is standard but the SD card slot provides an additional 16GB of storage (note that an SD card is not included). The track marking and Easy Search functions make it easy to find particular segments of recordings. At approximately 4 inches in length the Sony ICD-UX512RED is extremely compact and battery life is approximately 30 hours.

2. Philips LFH0655/27

The Philips LFH0655 has outstanding audio quality thanks to its ClearVoice technology, low-noise microphone, and stereo recording. The display is large and easy-to-read and an external hands-free clip-on microphone is included for maximum convenience. It supports USB 2.0 for fast data transfer and also allows USB powered recording to save battery power when a USB port is available. Throw in an index function, 4GB Storage, variable-speed playback, MP3 and WMA recording, and the Philips LFH0655 is a top pick for less than $100. The only downside is the 19 hour battery life.

3. Sony ICD-AX412

I love the features for the price that this Sony digital recorder provides. First, of course, file transfer to your computer via USB. You have to have that. But also long recording time (over 500 hours) and large memory (built-in 2GB with a card expansion slot) for the price. Additional features that you don't often find on digital recorders that cost less than $100 such as Overwrite that allow you to edit your original recording and search features such as Cue and Review. And this digital recorder has the ability to record in MP3 format. It even includes Digital Voice Editing Software and a voice email function. All in all, a hard package to beat.

4. Olympus WS-500M

The WS-500M's main selling feature is its 2G of internal memory, meaning that "it can store up to 500 songs and listen to them in impressive stereo sound" according to its advertising. Having that much memory also means, though, that you could use this digital recorder to record, store and transfer an impressive amount of sound files such as meetings, personal thoughts or lectures – and then easily transfer them to your PC as this Olympus digital recorder has one of my favourite features, one-step USB transfer. (The digital recorder plugs directly into the PC so you don't need a USB cable.) All that memory also gives you a whole lot of potential recording time – about 544 hours in this case in Long Play mode.

5. Philips 645 Voice Tracer

Phillips isn't known for its digital recorders but this is one sweet digital voice recorder for the price. Designed for making voice recordings on the go, the Phillips Voice Tracer features a one-touch option to instantly start recording, ClearVoice sound enhancement to capture quieter voices, and an integrated high-sensitivity, low-noise mono microphone. The USB interface is plug and play. An index function makes finding the passage you're looking for easier, and, in case you plan to store a lot of voice files, 4GB of memory is built in. The bad? Lower battery life than some (approximately 22 hours).

The Olympus VN 7600PC provides a reliable, long-lasting way to record your ideas and meetings and has some nifty features that you don't expect in a recorder in this price range such as index marking so you can easily find a particular place in a recording and the ability to record and play back in both MP3 and WMA formats. Other than that, the VN 7600PC stands out for its over 800 hours of recording time, voice activation functions, fast/slow playback modes, long battery life, and low price.
