Tell us a little about your small business (+URL).
I run a recording Studio that primarily works with musicians and also provides some voice over work for clients all over the country.
How long have you been running your small business?
4 years
How did you get into starting a small business?
The original goal was to build the studio slowly, as a hobby, learning gear and software as I acquired it. I have a background in Audio/Video production and had developed a talent for mixing music so I was looking for a way to expand on that talent. After I left my last job, I started marketing my recording marstudio while job hunting. The result has been regular demand for my services.
Describe your starting a small business experience.
Make sure everyone I know is aware of my recording studio and its availability. Good old fashioned networking has had the most impact. I've been very active in the music community in my area for nearly 20 years, so I'm a known entity. Making sure everyone knows I have a studio has made the difference between being busy and staring at the walls.
Lessons learned
- Make sure you're going into a field you love being involved in - that way, it doesn't feel like work. I can honestly say I never really understood what a burning desire felt like as it relates to my work until I started doing something I love. Think of it this way - if you would do it for free because you enjoy doing it so much, then you're on the right track. The other piece of advice? Don't dive head first into an endeavor without the resources to get you through the growing pains. It doesn't matter how much you enjoy your work if you can't put food on the table.
